A Utah farm provides more than 90% of the sour cherry supply at Southern California stores. But help might be on the way.

Of all the rare fruit at Southern California markets, none is more elusive or more obsessively hunted than the humble sour cherry. The fruit is readily available canned or frozen, but these days bakers, jam makers and home cooks really want fresh. And though sweet cherries have become commonplace, sours, which are also called tart or pie cherries, are hardly grown here at all.

Maui Brewing Bikini Blonde Lager is a classy quaffing beer for backyard relaxing in the summer.

This is the ideal backyard beer for summer (made on Maui, where they know all about sunny weather). It's a Munich helles -type lager, made with Pilsner and Munich malts and German Hersbrucker and some American German-style hops. The result is light and drinkable but not mindless: bright and crisp with a good deal of quiet, malty heft.

Deviled eggs can be heavenly. Restaurants in L.A. and beyond are rediscovering them, but it's easy to create your own. Start with a good hard-boiled egg.

You always know where to find me at a picnic or potluck: I'll be that guy standing by the deviled eggs, probably with my elbows out, the better to fend off all competitors. Sorry, I know it's rude, but these little things are so delicious. And until recently, they were one of those foods that were only served by the homiest of home cooks. To be honest, I can't remember the last time I made them myself.

How to make this classic sweet-and-salty bar snack.

Dear SOS: During my family reunion in Portland, Ore., this past summer, we stumbled upon what we all decided were the tastiest beer nuts. We had them at Deschutes Brewery at 210 NW 11th Ave. I also discovered, upon returning to California, that some of my friends didn't know what beer nuts were! I would very much like to make some and share with them.

On summer nights, who doesn't love a beer garden? Sitting outside at long communal tables, tucking into juicy sausages, hoisting a stein of beer. Though you can now buy your own traditional beer garden tables and benches, somehow having six or eight people in your backyard doesn't a beer garden make. You need a boisterous crowd. Draft beers in big mugs. Sausages and wursts. Definitely fries or slaw. Strings of lights. Maybe an oompah band.
