With craft cocktail bars sprouting like fungi in a locally sourced mushroom martini made with artisanal bitters, sometimes you find yourself longing for a simpler cocktail. Perhaps, like Carrie Bradshaw in "Sex and the City," you crave a rosy-red cosmopolitan. Or maybe you pine for a white sugar-rimmed lemon drop, like the kind you quaffed in college before passing out in the bushes by the campus bar.

For him, here was only one way to cook Dungeness crab — until he tried it grilled at Russell Moore's Camino restaurant in Oakland. Now he's grilling it at home.

If you ever needed a reminder of how much good there is in the world — and these days, who doesn't? — just cook a Dungeness crab. It is so easy to prepare; the meat is so sweet and tender; it is so nearly perfect just as it comes in its original wrapper. Surely, some greater power must love us mightily to give us anything that delivers such pleasure and demands so little.

Beets, English peas, Brussels sprouts, Savoy cabbage. These and more call out for a place in the kitchen.

Although summer claims many of the sexiest, most attention-grabbing vegetables, such as eggplants, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, in Southern California the vegetables that thrive in winter are equally abundant and alluring. Roots, crucifers and peas may be available year-round, but winter is their time to shine. In the spirit of the many award ceremonies held in this season, here are some of my favorite early winter vegetables and producers who do an extraordinary job with them, based on notes, photos and tastings over the last 14 years.

At the holidays, the sound of corks popping and the sweet gurgle of sparkling wine splashing into Champagne flutes sparks the celebration. But good Champagne for a crowd can be expensive, and in the thrill of the party, that exquisite vintage Champagne can go unnoticed. As for the cheap stuff, well, it's hardly worth buying.

Have you ever had the bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich at the new Storefront Deli in Los Feliz? Because that sandwich, less made from scratch than reverse-engineered from a meat lover's fondest late-summer daydreams, is at the heart of one of the strongest culinary movements in the country at the moment: the radical reinvention of everyday dishes by deconstructing them and rebuilding them to the tiniest detail.

Banana Oatmeal Raisin Muffins
Dec 28th 2012, 03:05

Holiday baking is probably over but I have yet another great baking recipe to share with you all—banana oatmeal raisin muffins. I have always loved banana nut muffins, and raisin butter cake, so this muffin is sort of combining all my favorite ingredients into one, with the additional of oatmeal for the extra fiber and nutrition. This muffin is rather filling because of the high-energy bananas and also the oatmeal, but the taste is absolutely delicious. It’s perfect as a breakfast, with a cup of milk or coffee, and a quick pick-me-up afternoon snack. I have also packed this for my son so he can have it at his day care. The new year is just around the corner and I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2013. (Click Page 2 for the Banana Oatmeal Raisin Muffins Recipe)

Downtown L.A.'s Grand Central Market is undergoing a major overhaul intended to catapult the landmark community marketplace into a new food-retail age. The nearly 100-year-old open-air market on Broadway near 3rd Street houses more than 40 food stalls, which will be updated to reflect a changing downtown and the next generation of vendors while staying true to its legacy, planners say.

Ginger Soy Soba

My friend Simply Reem is famous for her ginger soy soba noodle. Her soba noodles with sweet ginger scallion sauce is one of the most pinned noodle pictures on Pinterest, and that says a lot about the recipe (and the accompanying photos). When I told her to fill in for me and guest post on Rasa Malaysia while I am traveling overseas, I suggested to turn her famous ginger soy soba noodles into a party food fit for holiday parties, and that the serving is on a soup spoon. She delivered and here is her gorgeous photography with the simple yet delicious ginger soy soba noodles. If you don’t have many soup spoons to serve at your party, you can always make a big batch of the noodles so your guests can help themselves. You can also serve the noodles in small appetizer bowls so the presentation of the ginger soy noodle looks enticing to the eyes as well as to the taste buds. This is the last recipe before the holidays. I hope you have enjoyed the many cookie recipes and party food recipes on Rasa Malaysia in the past few weeks. Happy holidays to you all and have a wonderful and safe celebration! (Click Page 2 for the Ginger Soy Soba Recipe)

Forget classic puff pastry for borsellini and other filled desserts — 'rough puff' is the way to go, especially for home cooks. Let Nancy Silverton and Carolynn CarreƱo show you how.

One of the things that keeps me excited about what I do is that I am always learning.

Christmas dinner is a meal with plenty of tradition, but it's not as hidebound as Thanksgiving. It's more a matter of choice than obligation. We tend to serve the same dishes year after year, but it's because we want to — because we love them and feel like celebrating when they're on the table.

Craving a giant iced platter of raw oysters? Try Cliff's Edge, where they're a bargain on Thursday nights; L&E Oyster Bar and its 'daily dozen'; or Church & State downtown.

Maybe it's the nip in the air. Maybe it's the proximity to the holidays, but this time of year I'm craving oysters. And I don't mean a measly half-dozen but a giant iced platter of glistening raw mollusks ready to be slurped down with Champagne or a minerally white wine.

The newly redesigned Beverly Hills restaurant modernizes the dining room and brings a fresh take on Japanese cooking as it plays down its tasting menu and adopts an Italian course structure.

The first responsibility of any great restaurant is to keep you in the bubble, the soft-serve cocoon of illusion where you forget the world exists for anything but your pleasure. And the newly redesigned Spago, from the moment you toss your keys to the valet to the moment you stagger back out again, gives good bubble.

Page and Lee mandarins don't taste exactly like other oranges. That's why they're prized.

Mandarins at their best are the noblest of citrus, with intense, complex aromatics and fascinating varietal identities. Two clementine-tangelo crosses prized for their rich flavor, Page and Lee, are now in peak season and well worth searching out. Page long been a favorite at farmers markets, and recently commercial growers have caught on and planted them on a larger scale. Its half-sister, Lee, is rare in California but arguably has even more extraordinary flavor.
