Cashew Shrimp
Oct 28th 2013, 17:31, by Rasa Malaysia

I love it that the Chinese restaurants in the US offer special lunch menu. For about $5-$7, you get a complete meal of an entree, rice, and a bowl of soup. Some days when I am too lazy to make lunch, or when I don’t have lunch dates with my friends, I always find myself at a Chinese restaurant, getting my fix of cheap and filling Chinese food. Recently, I have been going to be a Chinese restaurant close to my house. I have tried many dishes on their special lunch menu, but I am hooked on their cashew shrimp—a simple shrimp stir-fry with cashew nuts (my favorite nut), snow peas, carrots, and canned straw mushrooms. I am probably biased as I love both shrimp and cashew nuts, but I thought their version of cashew shrimp has “wok hei” (breath of wok), with juicy and bouncy shrimp, and the sauce is the epitome of Cantonese cooking—light, savory, and just coats the shrimp...

BODUM BISTRO Electric Standmixer Giveaway
Oct 26th 2013, 17:21, by Rasa Malaysia

To celebrate the upcoming holiday season, I’m partnering with BODUM to giveaway a BODUM BISTRO Electric Standmixer. There will be one (1) winner whom will receive one (1) BODUM BISTRO Electric Standmixer, in the color of your choice. The suggested retail price of the BODUM BISTRO Electric Standmixer is US$400. Whether your decorating style is cool contemporary, country cozy, or eclectic elegant, there is nothing as homey the smell of freshly baked bread or cookies and cakes. (House sellers have taken advantage of this fact for a long time by sticking a cookie sheet in the oven before the potential buyer arrives). Baking has always been about more than breads and cakes. It's about home, about family and friendship, and about knowing where we belong – a nicely old-fashioned sense that things are OK the way they are. And if they're not, let's at least try to make them better by...

Critic's Choice: Pancakes are an American comfort food favorite. Three L.A. eateries offer terrific examples: Cooks County, Valerie and Axe.

Name me one person who doesn't occasionally long to wake up, slowly, and amble out to the kitchen for a pancake. But not all of us are blessed with a significant other with serious pancake-making skills. Fortunately, you can find some stellar examples at restaurants around town that are ready to welcome sleepy heads. Add a good cup of coffee and it's not so bad waking up to the world. American comfort food at its best.

The California Cook: Lasagna can be made so many ways. It's the perfect project for a Sunday afternoon.

We all have our own rituals for fall Sunday afternoons. Some guys sit around and watch football; for me it takes only about a quarter before I need a nap. Others feel inspired to take up household projects; the less said about my ability with a hammer the better.

Farmers Markets: Among the farms selling at the Encino market are Givens Farms, Underwood Family Farms and Tutti Frutti Farms.

The 19-year-old Encino farmers market is one of the two best in the San Fernando Valley, because of its large size and quality, and its preponderance of farmers over prepared food. It's on a par with Studio City, which the manager, Carole Gallegos, ran until 2011, but it's in a pleasanter location, in a park, with better parking. The market's earnings go to ONEgeneration , a respected nonprofit that provides care to seniors and children.

Culinary SOS: Eggs, celery and mayonnaise: Canter's Deli keeps egg salad simple.

Dear SOS: Don't laugh, but the egg salad from Canter's Deli on Fairfax Avenue is lovely. Light, not oily or overly mayonnaise-sodden. Think you can get the recipe for this retiree?

Orange Chiffon Cake
Oct 24th 2013, 20:13, by Rasa Malaysia

Chiffon cake—much like angel  cake in the US (but tastes better)—is one of the most popular cakes in Malaysia and Singapore. Walk into any cake shops or supermarkets, you can always find various flavors of chiffon cake for sale. Chiffon cake is prized for its very light, soft, and cottony texture. Everyone loves it. Believe it or not, I was quite a Orange chiffon cake baker when I was in high school. During one of my high school years, I remember my eldest sister-in-law started baking chiffon cake at home. She had learned how to bake chiffon cake from her co-worker and started testing out the recipe. I loved pottering in the kitchen, watching the preparation and baking process. She started teaching me her recipe. I remember vividly she had to beat  the egg whites until soft peaks formed, during which she would turn the container with the egg whites upside down to test the readiness. She...
