Salt and pepper, two of the most basic ingredients in a kitchen and they do wonders for Chinese deep-fried dishes, such as this Salt and Pepper Shrimp. This Salt and Pepper Shrimp is one of the most requested recipes from my readers and finally, you can have the recipe and try to make it at home. For the shrimp, I recommend buying shell-on and head-on shrimp because salt and pepper shrimp will not be the same if it’s made with peeled shrimp. The end result is a serving of Salt and Pepper Shrimp that tastes like it's straight from a Chinese restaurant kitchen! This salt and pepper shrimp recipe is actually...

The journeyman actor's fascination took him to Santa Barbara to hang with winemakers. Persistence got his bottles into some of L.A.'s top restaurants.

Jeff Fischer doesn't have a vineyard or a winery. He has no formal training and zero employees. Yet in a short time he's managed to land his small-batch Habit wines in nearly 50 of L.A.'s top restaurants, including the Chateau Marmont, Spago, AOC, Ink, the Hungry Cat, Providence, Hatfield's and Bäco Mercat.

The authentic menu and even the TV are tuned to Hunan tastes. Bring a sense of adventure and keep the water glass handy.

When you tell somebody about a Hunan restaurant, always begin with the steamed fish head. The fish head will be large, probably from an enormous carp or similar freshwater species, thus comical, and it will be frosted with the chopped blend of dried, fresh and fermented chiles that give Hunanese cooking its reputation for head-snapping heat.

Though the address reads Main Street, the specialist shop Japanese Knife Imports in Venice is a bit hidden away, down a few steps from the parking lot of a nondescript multi-unit building, indicated only by No. 105. "I kind of like it like that," proprietor Jonathan Broida explains. "In order to find me, people have already made some effort to do the research. And I end up with the kind of customer that I want."

He breeds pigs that produce dark meat of excellent flavor, though he's still not sure if selling pork will prove economically viable.

Locally raised pork is rare in Southern California, but in a hilly grapefruit grove north of San Diego, fenced to exclude mountain lions, 14 tasty piglets luxuriate, fattening for sale at the Santa Monica farmers market. They're the dream or folly of Oliver Woolley, who raises heritage pigs.

Was the sandwich indeed invented by a genteel earl averse to smearing mutton gravy on his hand of whist? Did Apicius once enjoy a hoagie made with flamingo tongues, rhinocerous and gold? Alas, we shall never know the answers to these pressing questions. We can, however, take a run at this week's sandwich quiz.

Sweet and Sour Pork Noodles
Mar 7th 2013, 02:18

When it comes to cooking, you don’t always have to make everything according to the book. For example: this absolutely delicious and appetizing sweet and sour pork noodles. Who says that sweet and sour pork can only be prepared as an entree and serve with steamed rice only. And certainly, noodle doesn’t have to be the same old chow mein.  Take two of the most popular Chinese recipes and combine them together means that you have the best of both worlds, in one dish! The taste is easy on the palate, the presentation utterly toothsome, what’s more, it’s a fulfilling and satisfying meal. There is nothing not to love about this killer combination. However, I am not the one who created this winning dish. I was inspired by a cookbook that I browsed randomly at the book store. I came home and created my own version. If you are not a pork eater, you can easily make this dish into a sweet and sour chicken noodles, which I am sure will be equally tantalizing. This combo has certainly sparked a few ideas in me, think kung pao chikcken noodles. I think it can’t be half bad! (Click Page 2 for the Sweet and Sour Pork Noodles Recipe)
